Androgenetic Alopecia – What Is It?
Hair loss seems to be something that is a part of the lives of at least one person you personally know, maybe even yourself. There are hundreds of hair loss products on the market these days available to help those suffering from hair loss and the self esteem loss it causes. You know what “hair thinning” may be in general, but what exactly is Androgenetic Alopecia?
Androgenetic Alopecia – What Is It?
I bet you’ve heard the words before, but you still don’t really know what it is. Androgenetic Alopecia is a common disorder that affects men and women. It is a type of pattern baldness or alopecia, and happens more often in men than women. It seems to be a genetically related hair disorder. Patients with Androgenetic Alopecia will have less and less hair over time. There is also a typical pattern of hair loss that is usually seen for this type of hair disorder. There appears to also be a correlation to a lack of vitamin D in the body and the way the hair can’t regenerate itself over time. This particular hair disorder affects about 50% of men and 15% of women that are premenopausal. It increases in women following menopause, and appears to affect 75% or more of women over 65 years of age. Although Androgenetic Alopecia may seem scary sounding to you, it is generally considered to only be a cosmetic disorder. It may affect you psychologically and emotionally, but will in no way affect the quality of your overall health. Androgenetic Alopecia appears to affect mostly white men. After that, Asians and African Americans are mostly the ones that are affected. Most patients with this hair disorder will see signs of it prior to the age of 40, but most will see some signs of it prior to age 30. So now when you hear the words Androgenetic Alopecia, you will know exactly what it is…a not so scary hair loss condition.
